The correct size is Group 34R, which is very hard to find. Interstate Batteries makes one, their model MT-34R which is rated at 700 CCA (cold cranking amps). The "R" means that the terminals are reversed, with the positive terminal closest to the firewall. This is the largest battery I know of that fits the tray and isn't too tall.

Brick8 posted a while back that he put a Group 48R in his '96 9000CS. This battery is about 1-3/4" longer than the 34R size, so it straddles the tray. It is 14% larger than the 34R, and size matters. The 48R is a much easier size to find. See the link below for group sizes and dimensions.

You need a battery with plenty of reserve power for running the anti-theft system, cooling fan, etc. after the engine is turned off. Saab specifies 70AH (amp hours). Don't go overboard on the CCA number. Battery makers achieve higher CCA numbers by means of thinner plates that corrode away faster. When it comes to the battery warranty, the most important consideration is how long they will replace it free (no proration). You want the free period to be 3 years or longer.

Get a fresh battery (look for a date on the battery case). It should be no more than 3 months old if it is the kind of battery that you maintain or 6 months old if it is maintenance free.

Summer heat is harder on batteries than winter cold. Summer weakens batteries, which then fail in the winter. If your existing battery is doing the job well now, then there is no pressing need (other than maybe your peace of mind) to replace it.
