Electronic battery desulfation: real, usable and good. Posted by vtsnaab [Email] ![]() ![]() ![]() |
I say this from my current personal experience.
My car's battery is anything but new - and even sat for long periods before and after I bought the car, but with the arrival of low (and now subzero) temps my car was cranking much too reluctanly for my liking and the cranking voltage was much too low.
So I started the usual - examining viable options for a decent/affordable replacement, with acceptable ones found in the $60 range.
Whilst mulling that over I looked at instructables.com for some LED info I wanted and saw, much to my surprise the plans for a battery desulfator in an altoids tin. A very neat idea - if it works...?
I knew about combatting sulfation via an old-fashioned method which I have used with great success (sometimes getting 3 more years out of a very tired battery that way) - but the technique of shaking the sulfation off the cells via charging with resonant frequencies and small spikes was totally new to me.
Making this already long story a smidgin shorter - I found batteryminder's products and some very good reviews - and then northern tool's cyber-monday sale with a plug-in model for $35, so I got one and started using it immediately.
Guess what ?
It is obviously working and working very well on my battery.
I've had it on overnight for just over a week now and last night it was -16F here; and before it warmed up today I started my car and it cranked very strongly with a low of 10.1V (as opposed to <9V in warmer weather before by the car's own EDU.)
I can now highly recommend this idea to others without any reluctance.
Looks like I can skip that battery buy for another season at least.
Do feel free to email me if you want more exact info about this.
Best Wishes,
mark
