Idle Hunting 2000 - 500 RPM

After transplanting an engine into my '97 Scarabe Green CS, I was confronted with a 1700 RPM idle. A minute or so later, the idle speed would hunt between 2000 and 500 RPM.
This morning, an added complication; the engine misfired badly. It wouldn't stay running. No amount of throttle could keep it going. Ruling out fuel pump failure due to numerous restart attempts, the misfire made me think about swapping DI cassettes. (I carry a DI cassette and a serpentine belt in the spare tire compartment.) I removed and cleaned the plugs, put dielectric grease in the boots, and fitted the other DI cassette. No change- -so, back on with the original DI cassette.
I substituted a spare MAP sensor and VOILA- -the misfire disappeared! However, the hunting idle continued.
Finally, I decided to change the IAC motor. (DUH!!!) What a pain! Both brass hose fittings came out of the throttle body, stuck in the IAC hoses. But once installed, the idle smoothed out to a steady 850 RPM.
Happy Trails,
-Don
