Your description of your symtoms leaves me a tad confused, because it mentions two separate issues common to this transmission.

If it seems the car is starting off in too high a gear or shifting too early, does the problem go away when you manually select a gear with the lever? In other words, if you shift it yourself rather than leave it in "D?"

If so, bingo, you need governor seals. An easy DIY job and a cheap fix if you pay someone.

Slipping, on the other hand, is if the car's RPMs rise but the car doesn't pick up speed to match. If that's your problem, the band adjustment MIGHT help, but probably won't.

So. If you can eliminate the issues by manually choosing the gears, you've got a cheap fix on your hands. If not, in all likelihood your transmission is on its last legs, though you can try a couple things to restore proper operation. If all that fails, buy the Ericksson rebuild if the financials make sense for you.
