The car is a 96 9000CS. Which has the Power Steering Pump sitting under the alternator. The work is not difficult, the access is the tough part.
Here we go.
1. Removed the right front tire. (wrap a plastic bag around the disc brake now, my face is all black from rubbing agaist it)
2. Remove the front half of wheel liner. (Removing the back half would give you a slight, very slight access improvement. But it entails removing the molding under the door, etc. not worth it)
3. Draw a belt routing diagram.
4. Turn the tensioner idler bolt counter-clockwise (it is a left-hand screw, so it would not come loose) to slacken the belt. This is done from the top of the engine with a 19mm socket (actually, 19mm is slightly too big and 17mm is too small. Is there an 18mm socket?). Need a helper to do it. One is pushing against the hydaulic dampener, can't be done quickly with a lot of force. Just do it slowly without letting off.
5. Slip the belt off.
6. Disconnect the high pressure line, 16mm wrench. Wrap a piece of plastic around the line to keep it clean.
7. Remove the two long bolts, 13mm, that hold the P.S. pump to the bracket. This is done through the pulley side openings. Use a screw driver to lever the pump out of the bracket, again, through the pulley side openings. The fit is snug, do it gently, top, bottom, top, bottom, to prevent damaging anything.
8. Take out the pump to the front of the bracket.
9. Disconnect the low pressure line now by loosening the hose clamp and then give the connection point a twist to break the hose grip. (I tried to disconnect it first, but it is an exercise in futility)
10. To install the replacement P.S. pump. Do everything in reverse. First connect the low pressure hose. I did not tighten the hose clamp initially to avoid a twist in the line.
11. Slide the P.S. pump back into the bracket. It is easier than I had anticipated. I got the lower bolt hole lined up without any fuss, stick the long bolt back in to hold the position. The top one is a littel tougher, just use a screw driver to gain some leverage. Again, do it gentlely.
12. Connect the high pressure line, very easy.
13. Tighten the hose clamp on the low pressure line.
14. With the helper pushing against the 19mm bolt, slip the belt back on. Make sure that the belt is centered on every pulley.
15. Do the post installation stuff such as adding the P.S. fluid, bleeding it, etc. This can be found in this BB, I won't repeat it.
Not difficult at all.
I promised this one a while back. But have been tied up with fixing my son's 900T. Which has a string of fixing's to do. This 9000 had been sealed in the garage by the 900T. Until now.
