I think the first thing you want to do with the SRS is go to a mech with a TECH 2 and see the code. He-She can also reset it and you may be fine for awhile. Do a search on this BB and see what turns up. Of all the systems, this is the most difficult for us DIYers to work on.
I have been getting the "front left sensor" code for years and years, and the reset is good for about 6 months. You might consider cleaning the contacts on the sensors and the CPU before you take it in for a code check/reset.
MY OPINION ONLY: I am beginning to consider the cost-risk-frustration factor and considering the removal of my system. I do not like relying on a 15+ year old first generation system to be always ready. There are strong opinions on this one, and you will not get a mechanic to touch the system in any capacity other than component replacement. This is a solid car, and SRS was added after the car was designed and acclaimed as a safe automobile.
While searching, look for a fellow from Vermont who has done all of the above.
Good luck with your car, Mike
