Not an outstanding box being more than a bit clunky shifting, up or down.
Mine is my first 9000 Autobox. The 5spds I've owned, as viewed from hindsight, were NO picnic , troublesome, mediocre shifting, easy to break things, I went through 3 (4?)
So the auto is a nice change. Having said that I had My Autobox.. rebuilt.. at 60,000 miles. upon discovering ..half.. of a 50mm washer in the things' rock basket/ pseudo filter affair. Cost $3K but also with a 3 year, No questions/miles warranty :-)
The ZF internals are3 reasonably tough, The pump eats it sealing ring lands, sooner or later, 150 k is the average, I was told by the rebuilder. The clutch pack/basket design is errr.. Cheap.. stamped steel (even my Moto has a Billet basket, $100 for a new one compared to Zf's $300 replacement cost for theirs) The Basket gets pretty banged up, certainly so by full throttle shifting.
The thing tends to shift a wee bit harshly up or down. Smooth shifting is Not an accurate descriptor. Nothing like the box in wife's Acura, which I find to be disquietingly smooth shifting, after getting out of my pore Saab. Not a diss, just personal experience/advise on what to realistically expect from this 14 year old car.
I intialy changed the fluid annually and I think I'm into an every 6 months regime now.
