#1) The expansion valve is the orifice.
#2) The pressure switches (one on the high side and one on the low side) must be electrically closed. That is, there should be continuity between the two terminals when the plug is removed.
I don't know, but i would say switches going bad is not common. Much more likely is compressor failure, or other failures that would loose system pressure.
