It's a knock that is mostly quiet at idle, loudest when revving the engine, particularly under load. Definitely knocking in time with RPMs. 1997 Aero 5-Speed with only 66,000 miles on it. Bought it 4,000 miles ago, and it came with excellent maintenance records...
The noise started this morning. It was subtle. It seemed to come on as I was getting into the throttle, almost like a rapping noise in sync with the slight rumble in the exhaust. I honestly thought it sounded like I might have a leak at the exhaust manifold. It didn't even seem to do it at idle.
Then the noise got louder and more consistent, but it still rises & falls with engine revs.
I pulled the serpentine belt to make sure it's none of the accessories. No dice. I looked for something that might be knocking on the engine itself, maybe the exhaust, but still I found nothing.
It seems to be coming from the top of the engine, but from no particular side. I'll get a stethoscope to see if I can tell more precisely.
ANY advice is appreciated. This is really disheartening. I coughed up a pretty penny for this low-mileage specimen and now I'm afraid my bubble is burst.
Thanks folks.
