97 9000 CSE ...blown HG (long) Posted by skibumm100 [Email] ![]() ![]() |
It looks like the HG is blown in the 97 CSE. My wife was driving it yesterday on I-93 and she pulled into a rest area and saw smoke/steam coming out from under the hood. She called and said the car broke down. I got to the rest area in about an hour and looked it over and noticed a split in the heater hose near the block. Looked under the car and there wasn't a big puddle of coolant. Uh oh. She said the car was running fine and didn't notice the "low coolant" light on or the temp gauge buried. Of course, that doesn't mean it didn't happen. I turned the key and it cranked funny but sputtered and started. Ran rough. I shut it off. Went and got a couple gallons of coolant and some wrenches. Cut off the split part of the hose at the block and reattached the hose. Filled it up and started the engine. Looked around for more leaks. None. I let it run for a bit and watched the temp gauge. Looked OK. I got on the road and drove about 4 miles and pulled over. As soon as I got to the end of the ramp the car started running crappy and idled really rough at about 500 RPM and eventually stalled. It was like it was running on half the cylinders. No white smoke out of the tailpipe. When I restarted it it ran rough but if you rev it just a little in neutral it cleared up and ran smoothly. I turned around and headed toward home and the low coolant light came on after about 30 miles. I pulled over and the hose fix started leaking again. I redid the fix a little better and noticed the bubbles in the coolant tank. I drove it the rest of the way home with the reservoir cap slightly loose. It doesn't seem to be consuming coolant. It seems to be pushing it out. There is a small stream of bubbles but I'm sure if I close the top tightly, the punky heater hose will blow again as it's pretty soft. I think a HG job is inevitable. My guess is that re-torqueing is not an option. I don't know how hot it got. This engine has always been very noisy. Can the upper three timing chain guides all be changed easily while doing the HG job?
