The factory cap vents at a controlled rate into the coolant reservoir. A bad head gasket can dump more gases into the coolant system than the stock or aftermarket cap can handle.
If you suspect a head gasket problem, then it would be best to leave the cap loose. Not only to allow large amounts of gases to escape, but also to prevent pressure build up in the system, from forcing coolant into the cylinder when the engine is running or shut off.
If you have an automatic, check for bubbles in the reservoir then the transmission is in gear, brakes on, and the engine RPM at 1500. Even a small amount of bubbles is not good. If the gasket is bad enough you may see some bubbles at idle. A really bad gasket will cause missing on startup after the engine is cooled down with the radiator cap on.
