I can't believe nobody has offered this advise:
Older 9000's are known for rotting in odd places.
Get down on your knees, and look up under the rear tires in the top of the wells. Look where the strut mounts through. Take a good look at both sides. If you see any bad looking rust, I'd walk away unless the dude will sell for $800. When these start to rot, they go fast. Not many body shops want to take on the job of replacing rear strut supports in an old saab(is how they see it).
Also - Look closely at the A pillars. with your thumb, raise the windshield gasket edge and carefully inspect the A pillars on each side of the car. This also is another place that can salvage a title, and nearly no body shops will want to touch. Check all four door bottom edges for rot. Around the base of the rear hatch too.
Check the coolant overflow tank for proper green color. If the antifreeze looks dark, like it may be mixing with oil, again, walk away.
Turn the heat on!! When test driving, get it up to temp and turn on the heat. Take notice of any sweet / coolant smells. Leaking Heater cores are infamous in those cars.
Oh yeah, look at the tail pipe tip too..... lol
Good luck! Sounds like a $1400 car to me, unless it's in REALLLY GOOD shape.
