Hard question. Lots of factors involved. I've already mentioned some. The local shop that did head work for years doesn't do it any more. Others are 35 miles away. Too much time and too long a drive just to be told I ought to find another head rather than put a lot of work and money into this one.
I filled the pits in the head with JB Weld. SAAB endorses this for block pits(townsend and the archives). We'll see what happens.
A pro working on other people's cars has to go by the book. A backyard mechanic working on his own car needs to know his limits. The only way to find your limits is to push the envelope. Of course this attitude must not include putting others' safety or pocketbook at risk. The risk in this case is my time, a gasket set, headbolts, and possibly a flatbed ride home from the side of the road-- if I get out of the driveway.
