Or more specifically, a bad cable on the sensor. The insulation breaks down after 10-20 years, and the wires short or open. That is especially what is wrong if the ABS light only acts up when wet. The cables on the front wheels go well before the rear wheels because of the extra flexing during turning.
On the early cars (Mark II series ABS), you could short a test pin to ground and read flashes. I don't know if that still works on the later cars. Probably you need a Tech II.
What you can do is test the resistance of the sensor (should be around 1200 Ohms) and have an assistant flex the cable to see if there is an intermittent open/short.
On my 1990 (240K), I've replaced both front cables, and on my 1991 (175K), the left side once.
