Hypothetical head gasket question? Posted by skibumm100 [Email] ![]() ![]() |
Everyone knows you're supposed to install new head gaskets dry on a nice squeeky clean, perfectly flat block and cylinder head. Let's say that everything isn't perfectly flat. Iron block with a aluminum head. The two expand at different rates. If you were going to put something on the gasket as "insurance", what would you use? Any super-thin gasket sprays? Would you put it on both sides of the gasket or only one? Has anyone doubled up on 9000 gaskets? The car I'm working on appears to have had the HG done before. I don't know if it was machined. With a warped DOHC aluminum head I don't think you'd want to machine it flat because it would cause problems with cam bore alignment. I know people have had heads "flattened" using heat and a press. How flat do they get them? Back into spec or just closer to spec? Is it much better than just puting it on the iron block and torqueing it down? That would tend to flatten it.
