daven,
It sounds like the left rear latch mechanism may be the concern.
You indicate the lock button moves up and down freely, with its horizontal rod pivoting on the two plastic door inserts. Is the vertical rod attached to the horizontal rod and the door actuator rod?
You indicate both inner and outer door handles operate.
Can you see their attachment to the inner part of the latch?
Do they lift the bottom pin of the latch?
Use the right rear door latch as a guide. Open the door and remove the three torx bolts securing it. With the latch in your hands, close the pivoting portion by substituting a screwdriver for the door post. There are two pins on the latch that go through the door. When the top pin is lifted (by the inner or outer door handle) the bottom pin pushes through a half moon (in the door) and releases the latch pivot from the door post. If the bottom pin is incorrectly located, (ie, NOT in the movable half moon slot inside the door), there will be no way it can lift to move the latch pivot. Refit the right door latch and VERIFY it operates from the outer door handle BEFORE actually closing the door. (HINT: Locate the bottom pin though the lower hole AND the sliding halfmoon slot inside the door FIRST!)
Now, back to the problem. Try pulling the half moon slot on the inside of the left rear door towards the center of the vehicle at the same time an assistant opens the outside door handle.
Happy Trails!
