how long should the fan run?

I know the answer depends on many variables, but does 30 seconds sound reasonable for the radiator fan? I replaced the thermostat, thermostatic switch, and coolant with SAAB antifreeze from eeuro. Before the job, the fan would run for 4 or 5 minutes and bring the temp down to just below half-way; now it turns on briefly and the gauge does nearly nothing. The weather has been miraculously calm the past 24 hours, so I can't attest to engine temp in traffic and 120-degree sun.
