No failed re-mans? I beg to differ.

How about 4 bad rear re-man calipers on two cars in one year? I like re-mans for the time savings, but it's not always so.

I've only had 9Ks for 7 years, but have reported here, as have others, about getting reman calipers that are defective right out of the box and also a few weeks later. The offending brand is Centric, especially with rear calipers.

Caliper #1 (on a '95 CS)
Right rear has no adjusting screw installed. This is something you learn AFTER you've put everything back together and go to adjust the e-brake. Order replacement, go without e-brake for a week. At least the old one on the left still worked.

But it gets better....

Caliper #2: (on a '95 CS)
The replacement for caliper #1 arrives with a bleed screw broken and bent over 90 degrees. Return again, await replacement. Then do the job a second time.

Caliper #3 (this on a different car--a '96 CSE)
Goes on fine, everything works. Three months later the RR e-brake hangs up and won't release or only partially releases. But it will with a light finger pull on the lever on the caliper. Some days it locks up, other days it doesn't. Really fun to release it in winter, with slush or snow on my sloped driveway.

Caliper #4 (on the same car.)
Two weeks later the LR caliper begins hanging up. Can also be released with a light finger pull.

I'm not the only one reporting this failure on this brand caliper. So I give up on Centric. While eEuro will gladly exchange the parts, I don't care to do jobs twice (or more) because their supplier screws up. So I turn the defective Centrics in as cores and get remans from AutoZone. So far so good.

As you note, if the e-brake mechanism is failing, a basic home brew rebuild won't fix it, but in my experience, the re-man company doesn't necessarily do it right either.

A bigger issue is that the supply of rebuildable cores is shrinking, so over time this kind of thing may get to be a bigger problem.
