head gasket blown?

Symptoms:
1. Noticed engine felt like it was running on 3 cylinders all the sudden.
2. Low coolant level warning light came on at about the same time.
3. Next day topped up the coolant and started engine - ran fine. Saw no signs of coolant leaks. Drove 15 miles to work with no issues.
4. On the way home the same behavior occurred - low coolant light with 3 cylinders. Temp gauge was normal.
5. Pulled over close to home. Coolant was leaking from around the expansion tank - seemed to be coming from the cap (which is a year old).
6. When starting I saw a blast of white smoke out the tail pipe.
7. Later when the engine was cool I started it and drove it the last mile home and it seemed to be running on all 4 cylinders.
8. Loaner compression gauge isn't working properly (needle doesn't stay at peak), but 1 plug is oily (others are golden brown normal).
9. Coolant in expansion tank looks normal as does oil on dipstick.
'94 Aero with 200k miles. Last year got all new cooling system as preventative maintenance. No overheating events.
Should I be ordering a head gasket set? Will get a different compression gauge tonight.
