New heater core...defective?

I struggled through a heater core replacement last weekend (139k miles and still fast as ever). Bought a Nissens brand from Eeuro. I installed it very carefully, put in a new blower motor and tell myself "Thank god, I'll never have to do that job again!". Then a couple days later I see a small amount of coolant on my floor (5 oz. or so). I jump up to my favorite perch on top of the engine (not), peer down into the aquarium, cannot find any liquid on the hose connections going into the core. So I have to think the core has a hole in it and is a defective part. Is it critical which of the two hoses goes into the the top/bottom fitting on the core? I assumed it was not, but tried to put it back together the way that looked most original.
It doesn't appear to be leaking as much the last day or so, but still some. Thinking I might bypass the core with a u-shaped pipe so I can still drive it and try to get an exchange from Eeuro. Mark
