diagnosis help? - intermittent engine rough...

yesterday i started the car and it was running very rough, at idle, and with the accelerator pressed. opened the hood and found a bad fuel leak at the fuel damper valve (disintegrated flexible line where i had to re-attach the old plastic line to the fuel damper), which i fixed, and then the car was fine...
this morning i started the car and it was, again, running rough at idle, and with the accelerator pressed, heavy exhaust smell out the tail pipe, basically, same symptoms as yesterday.
i figured it was the same fuel leak issue, but i checked and it was dry, then i started wondering if it was starving for fuel from the other end (Pump), but something odd happened...
occasionally, the car which was struggling to idle around 800 rpm, would idle itself at 1500 rpm and smooth out (not rough). after doing that a couple times, the car corrected itself and ran fine.
i pulled the AMM harness while it was running (it stalled) and the connectors looked ok... put it back together, and it ran fine all day.
waiting to see if this happens again tomorrow... I am thinking AIC or an AMM on it's way out? any thoughts?
I figured the surging idle at 1500 smooth out was a clue, indicating one, or the other, or something entirely different.
