Yikes, what might my speed-related whine be?

I was driving down the interstate towards the end of a ~500 mile trip and noticed a loud whine in my '87 9kT 5-speed with 320k that stayed consistent for the final 100 miles of the drive. What was odd about it is that it didn't seem effected by steering angles, being on the gas versus overrun, or what gear I was in or if the clutch was down. Since it varied only with road speed and was audible at all speeds, I can't imagine it's a wheel bearing, CV, or inner driver.
The noise seemed to be coming from directly in front of me and wasn't louder with either window down.
The closest noise I've heard before is a new brake rotor rubbing on it's backing plate, but that varied with turning angle and I haven't been messing around down there recently. Nothing is visible rubbing on the drive shafts.
Any ideas on this one? Do speedometer cables ever do this? I ask because it sounds so close to right in front of me, though I realize the trans is up there too. The only other things I could think of that would vary only with speed would maybe be the final drive or half shaft bearings?
Any thoughts appreciated!
Thanks,
Craig
