Shifter Alignment Posted by Daven [Email] (#290) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Daven) on Sun, 9 Jan 2011 21:41:04 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Hey all.
My car is a 1995 9000 Aero.
I posted a question about shifter alignment a while back. Since then I've located the procedure on these bulletin boards have executed the alignment procedure step by step. I still have a slight grinding when upshifting and downshifting into 3rd.
I have a phillips head screwdriver that is a perfect fit for the alignment hole in the top of the transmission. No issue there.
For the alignment hole on the shifter rod I tried using the torx-flat head screwdriver tool (from the cars toolbox) and the 7-8" long dash screws from my 89' 900 convertible. Both tools seem to allow a certain amount of side-to-side movement.
When the procedure reaches step 5:
"Shine the flashlight into the base of the gear shifter. There is a
hole in front of the base of the shifter. Wiggle it slightly so the
hole lines up with another one on the gear selector rod just below it.
Insert the second rod to lock it in fourth."
I see that there is a semi-circle carved-out of the bottom of the dash fascia just above the shifter. It is just to the right of the hole where the trim plate around the shifter screws in. Is this little plastic cut-out the "hole" that needs to be aligned with the hole in the shift linkage?
When I line these two holes up , the tool I am using to do so is (ROUGHLY 90 degrees left to right of car) and at a 50-60 degree angle (front to back of car) and allows for a great deal of play.
What am I doing wrong here? Any help is greatly appreciated.
