Brake Piston not retracting when turning e-brake screw

I have a 1997 9000 turbo with 115k miles. I can't get the piston to retract in the read brake caliper. I did one side of the car fine....backed off the 4mm screw to retract the piston to make room for the new pads. On the other side though I can turn the screw but the piston will not retract. However if I turn it clockwise it does extend the piston. I'm guessing the adjustment screw may have cracked off inside the caliper and while it can extend by pushing down but it can't pull out. Any ideas of do I need a new caliper?
I have not tried just pushing the piston in because I don't want to damage it. Maybe it doesn't matter at this point.
Thanks.
