Car: 1994 9000 Aero 5MT, ~260K miles

Developed an alarming noise on my morning startups. Weather temps are anywhere from 38* to 50* and the car is in the garage overnight, but still makes the same noise.

I want to say it's the balance chain, but truly don't know what that would sound like. The noise goes away completely after about 15mins of driving and when the car is warm. It's consistently present at cold startup. Sounds like rattling or scraping and metallic in sound. Definitely coming from the accessory side of the engine. Newish serp belt and tensioner and from other problems I've resolved recently, the noise isn't the result of any pulleys.

The car still drives very well, has great power and idles normally with no noticeable vibration at idle or at speed.

Additional information, at ~260K miles, I've owned the car since 148K and other than headgasket, have had no major work done on the engine or turbo (the same can't be said for the transaxle :( ).


If this is the balance chain/guides, is the procedure reasonable enough to just order the guides and valve cover gasket, hoping that the worn guides are the issue? Or does this warrant replacing the chain and other items? Info found so far seems to point to 93 and earlier automatic transmission cars needing this type of repair. Any hints on a procedure would be much appreciated.
