I think you just need to snug up that downpipe. But remove it and the intake tube to the compressor side and check the impeller for binding, axial play, or side-to-side play. A tiny bit of axial play is normal.
If the turbo checks out, I'd say that downpipe is just a but loose, which explains the air-rushing sound you're hearing (and your mind is reading it as sandpaper rather than pressurized escaping exhaust).
As for the smoke, I second Street's comments. It usually takes a good hour before your newly-assembled engine will cease smoking.
