All:

I have been back and forth with email on a '98 CSE, bright (Imola?) red, that's on CList right now.

It's got relatively low miles, 129,000. It has a serious mechanical problem right now - - a head gasket job that the owner and his buddy goofed up somehow and it won't turn all the way over.

My guess is that they let it get off time, and the fix would be to pull the chain tensioner, valve cover, and remove the cam gears and unbolt the cam bearing caps, put engine on the marks and cams back in, tensioner, then valve cover etc and start it up and drive off.

Test to do first is jack up one wheel and use it to see if motor turns freely thru some part of the circle, which would show it's not seized, just bumping into open valves.

But it's 370 miles away from me, roughly, near Binghamton, NY, and it's winter, and I have finally decided I have way too many project cars already to bite for it.

My plan was to pack up all tools I could need, some cardboard, drop lights etc, and go there and look it over, do a deal, then fix it in his driveway and take it away with me.

One other fault with car, revealed in a pic he sent of a "little rust spot" is that that's really where the paint peeled from a dent in the left front fender, just ahead of the wheel. I think the turn signal lens is also needed.

He seems like a nice kid, not a con artist, who'd like to see the car gone and get some money back from it.

It ran "beyond strong" before a hose leaked and it overheated, he told me.

He sent me pix of the interior (tan) and it looks darn nice, driver seat doesn't look worn at all, fairly clean. Tires are worn out he said.

Good luck to any takers. I'll be calling him this AM to tell him I'm backing off.
