I remember years ago I read a book, "The Sports Car: Its Theory and Design" or some such title. The guy (A Brit, owner and driver of some antique classic sports cars) backed things up with physics, great book.

On tuned intakes and tuned headers he had a lot to say, and the theory is there, the lengths of the tubes should be such that pulses from various cylinders don't make standing waves that fight the throughput.

But he also made plain that the best design is found by trial and error.

And I remember he had an example of a stock factory cast iron "log"-type intake (I think) manifold from an early 1960s American Motors straight 6 that looked cheaper than heck and yet in bench tests it worked much better than a custom tuned one.

So there's no telling, was the upshot.

So I've never been a fan of headers etc. I've also seen lots of people struggle with beautiful looking things that don't fit to begin with and that won't stay tight, and that are bound to burn out pretty quick as they're where exhaust is at its absolute hottest.

(The author was kind of a fan of straight 6s, said it was the ideal motor design as the firing of the various cylinders cancelled pulses naturally.)
