Interesting post... I got some more info this weekend:
1. The seller is the second owner, and bought the car through a dealer. Probably part of the reason it is priced high. (Interestingly, the first owner was older and apparently paid cash for the vehicle...)
2. All work has been done by a dealer or Saab mechanic - the seller is not a DIYer.
3. The seller is open to a PPI and prefers it, so I'm guessing the car really is in good shape. I haven't seen the car yet other than in photos.
4. The KBB I looked up was around 3500 in excellent condition. The seller is open to negotiate, I did not mention the KBB yet, he indicated he won't take a low ball offer though.
5. It has not been advertised very long, I am the first inquiry.
I'd like my negotiation to go like yours! I'm going to hold off for a few days and hopefully that will help him realize your two points (Not many people are looking for Saab's/Repair bills could run high unless the owner is a DIYer) and he'd be willing to drop the starting price, significantly.
I'm willing to pay a fair price... assuming a PPI is good, probably this car would be worth b/w 3-3.5K to me. My current car is 1996 900s and has been my DIY car. It wasn't in great shape when I got it at 115K (now at 182K). So I'm willing to do some upgrades to a lower mileage vehicle and have it as my daily driver. Fun stuff!
