Mike - -
On my '96 I was doing this occasionally with only myself to blame - - I found if I got silly and turned the key towards LOCK when I meant to turn to unlock, or vice versa, that I was overreacting and quickly turning the key the other way. It would blow the fuse almost every time. I still goofily turn the key the wrong way sometimes, but if I wait a second for the lock motor to click, then turn it the correct way, it doesn't blow.
I also had big issues with the door latch works that were impossibly stiff to work, which I fixed by door disassembly and lubing everything under the sun.
Then I had trouble from door lock controller, black module up above driver's feet, and replaced mine with one from a '93 that had same maker, Kiekert, and same part #, but the relays inside it were larger than those on mine.
And I think I have a fuse that's 5 amps bigger than called for, which I did when I first started sorting things out and haven't switched back.
I figure if there's a short it will still blow, and if it's just a little spike of excess draw, it won't blow as easily.
