Japanese cars aren't perfect and high mileage ones will need stuff, just like any car. The only advantage is that they are easier to get fixed.
The issue with a '93 9K is that it's an oddball in terms of some parts, which make it more challenging to fix in some cases. An Aero for a teenage boy is a whole 'nother issue, which depends on the kid.
I put my kid in a '95 CS for about the same money I'd have spent on some Toyondaruzdassan and it's been pretty reliable for 6 years, although it's now showing its age. Her friends are on their 2nd or 3rd used Japanese car in the same number of years. Of course, YMMV!
