Others are more expert than I on this, but for starters...
The CEL will flash X times on the '93 (you don't have ODB 2). Count the flashes and do a search here for what it means.
Second, use a turkey baster to pull out the brown goop from the coolant tank. See if it recurs. What does the good smell like: oil or ATF?
Any sign of coolant on the dipstick, or frothy brown goop when you pull the dipstick?
Does your exhaust smell sweet, like coolant?
Pull the plugs and see what they look like. Any sign of fouling?
Do you see any leakage at the head gasket? Common leak point is the front corner (driver's side). Lots of older Saabs seep a little there.
Is your car an automatic? Brown goop could also be a leak in the tranny cooler. It was on my '95. This is unrelated to the heater hose change, and could be coincidental. But check your ATF level and see what the fluid looks like.
Others will jump in here for more info.
