Car stalled and won't start

I have the problem with the dead speedometer which I had intended to address this weekend. The car has been stalling on highway off-ramps - as described by others in this BB.
Last night, I was stuck in stop-and-go traffic on the way home - finally got out of it and just as I turned onto my street the car stalled again...except this time it wouldn't restart. It would sound like it wanted to start but wouldn't. I pushed it over onto the lawn to troubleshoot....(could have been much worse if it died at work, 30+ miles away, or further).
I'm suspicious of the fuel pump and have run part of Ari's no-start checklist and I don't hear the fuel pump running.
Would this be a normal failure mode for a fuel pump? Those I've had fail previously on my two 900s have usually occured after the car sat for awhile...(overnight or for a couple hours).
Also, looking at the eeuroparts.com website I see two Walbro pump inserts available - one is an 8 mm, 1 barb and the other is 6 mm , 3 barb. Both list my car (1997 Saab 9000 CSE turbo) as compatible. Is the only way to tell which one to use to remove the fuel pump from the car and take it apart and compare to the existing pump insert?
My 9000 CSE is the 2.3L 4 cyl. turbo.
Thanks for any help,
Todd inMA
