to prevent rust in the rear shock towers and around the wheel moldings!
If it's just minor seepage, I'd leave it alone; I did this job on my Audi A4, which has an actual oil pan gasket, and it turned into a messy, all-day job with minimal improvement (Audi/VW V6 engines also have upper and lower oil pans, so there's two gaskets that can/do leak - I replaced only the lower one, tightened the upper while the inner bolts were exposed). What appears to be seepage from the junction between the block and the oil pan may actually be oil seeping out of the front or rear main seals and migrating along the seam.
