A while ago the ACC in my '96 CSE started blipping out and eventually seemed to stop altogether. Occasionally, oftentimes seemingly after hitting a bump in the road, it would turn back on for a few minutes then shut off again. It always seemed to turn on when turning the key in the ignition but then shut off during starting and not turn back on. I mentioned this back then and it was suggested that the problem could be a ground (under the left front speaker) or that the ACC head was simply bad. Replace it.
Update: I replaced the head with a known good one with the same results. I checked the ground cluster but removing the wires, cleaning them up and then installing them with a little dielectric grease thrown in for good measure. (BTW, the wires and contacts looked clean as ever.)I'd given up and was just looking forward to summer when the defrost wouldn't be so missed. Today, I was driving and I accidentally turn on my high beams. Lo and behold, the ACC kicked on as well. I turn the hi beams off, the ACC turns off a few seconds later. Hi beams on, ACC on. That was at lunch. After work, nothing I did turned the ACC on.
Now, it is obvious that I have a wiring issue and not necessarily a component issue. Does anyone have any further suggestions? Honestly, at this point, I'm stumped. There isn't a relay that I can see for the ACC system and all the fuses associated with it are new. Where would you suggest I look next?
Thanks for all your input and help. I always tend to sort these things out but this one buggin'.
