The handbrake lever should not need to be touched. I've had my rear calipers off a few times. Disconnect the handbrake cable from the caliper. There's a short, stubby bolt, I think 12 or 13 mm, that covers an Allen bolt adjuster. Back off the adjuster. If you're turning it the wrong way, then you'll know because the brake will stop the wheel from turning. Then remove the spring located on the outward face of the caliper, loosen the brake line now to make it easier for yourself later, then back off the long pins that are located under the plastic caps on the back side of the caliper. These also are Allen bolt type. Remove the caliper and unscrew it from the brake line.
I've used the Haynes manual for brakes on my 9kt, and it's actually pretty good.
