This seems to be a popular subject lately; rather, we have had too many accidents.
My 96 9000CS, 75K, auto tranny, was rear-ended last week. The rear bumper was pushed in and tucked under at the driver side. The hitter's insurance company, Geico, gave a preliminary estimate of $1500. Which was upgraded to $2500 once the bumper and trim pieces were removed by the body shop. Upon which, Geico wanted to total my car! I protested and sent them the KBB ($3430) and DADA ($3360) guidelines. Just for good measure, I told them in no uncertain terms, that "I can not accept totaling the car for $2500. I will fight this decision". They came back and agreed to pay the $2500 damage without totaling my car.
I have also found quite a number of high-priced Saab ads at usedcars.caranddriver.com, classified.carforums.net, most of the Saab's with low mileage (85K~120K) have prices ranging from $4000 ~ $8000. I gave these figures to Geico over the phone to bolster my case too. I believe KBB and NADA did most of the heavy lifting for me.
The point is "be prepared" and followed by "be firm".
One surprise I came upon was the rapidity KBB and NADA reduce their guidelines. in KBB's case, it dropped from $3655 (the day after the accident, but I did not get a printout) in a week to $3430. So, get KBB and NADA printouts as soon as the accident happened.
