Without opening up my "aquarium" and checking the wire color codes, I will hazard to guess that the device that you banging on is the "anti-frost switch" - do a search of the archives using this term. The function of the anti-frost switch is to turn off the compressor when the evaporator gets below a certain temperature, so that it doesn't freeze over and block airflow (this happened on my C900 before moving the sensor location).
Before parts replacement, be very sure that the connections are clean and intact. If the anti-frost switch is defective, you should be able to replace it without opening up the "freon system", but pay careful attention to where the sensor tube is located on the evaporator.
