The model year matters

My '96 manual says the oil capacity is 5.1 quarts (4.7 liters). It takes about 4 quarts to reach the max line on the dipstick. That's after letting it drain a full half hour with the front end elevated 6 inches, changing the filter and running the engine briefly to fill the filter. Is there still a full quart of old oil in there? Where is it trapped?

There are 4 possibilities:
1. The manual is right and the dipstick is right.
2. The manual is right and the dipstick is wrong.
3. The manual is wrong and the dipstick is right.
4. The manual is wrong and the dipstick is wrong.

There is a 5 position often stated, that the dipstick is right and the manual is irrelevant.

Two things are certain:
1. If the dipstick accurately shows the maximum fill the engineers intended, then the engine tolerates being overfilled an extra quart. If this was not so, then we would have known it on this board long ago.
2. Those who chose to "overfill" know how to do level checks and top up. They go by the A or the X in the word "MAX" that is printed on the dipstick.

I think it is important to be clear about the model year we are driving. Per my Haynes manual:
4.2 liters B202 engine all years.
4.3 liters B234 engine up to 1993.
5.5 liters B204 and B234 engine 1994 and up.

I doubt that 5.5 liters is correct, unless SAAB sold Euro cars with higher oil capacity. But SAAB apparently increased the capacity in 1994 by about a full quart. Maybe what we should be polling is what year are you driving, what does your manual say, and does the car have a turbo. All those things make a difference, as you can see in the link.

For what it's worth, the Haynes manual says that the difference between the MIN and MAX index marks on the dipstick is 1.0 Liter.
