Axle Shaft Spline/Bearing Lube Posted by RAVC1 [Email] (#247) [Profile/Gallery] (more from RAVC1) on Fri, 8 Jul 2011 10:04:24 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
In disassembling by usable vehicle (93 9000 CSE) and my donor parts vehicle (93 9k CS) I made a few observations. With both vehicles the passenger axle shaft was more difficult to remove from the wheel bearing.
It was clear that the outer splines on both axle shafts had debris on them but the passenger axle required more force to remove from each vehicle. I typically delivered this force using my 3 lb 12" iron sledge hammer. I was surprised how hard I had to strike the passenger axle shaft on the car I am putting back into service (the CSE). This also made me think finding a means to press them out would be much better for the outer CV joint. Please advise on this as well, because I would like to rebuild a set of axle shafts and have them ready to install when the need arises rather than respond to an urgent need to replace the shafts.
When I was at my local Saab dealer purchasing parts for my 5-speed conversion I noticed a small tube of lube in the part diagram that is to be applied to the axle shaft splines before insertion into the wheel bearing. What are suitable lubricants for this application? I failed to ask the dealer...
Thanks,
Rick
