Try not to use goop it distorts dents the O ring and risks a full seal. I use bits of masking tape to 'tape the ring into the valve cover. Pieces Long enough to extend an inch or so beyond the cover's outer edges . This holds the gasaket in place ( barely :-) and once the cover is placed on the head an the bolts just started then just pull out the tape bits.
With care, none of it breaks off stays stuck in there as the tape adheres poorly to the inside of the valve cover no matter how carefully one cleans the oil residue.
Far easier to do, than to describe this 'trick' though .. try it?
