With cold or barely warm engine, spray liberally with Simple Green full strength (undiluted concentrate).
Let it sit. Hose off with a strong spray. Keep water away from the various electrical boxes and connections, or make sure you cover them with plastic bags or wrap them to keep water off.
Use a brush as needed to loosen up the heavier glop and grunge. The back of the engine is harder, sometimes easier to do as a separate wash. You can't see what you're doing back there, though.
Spray the Simple Green on other surfaces, too, like false bulkhead, sheet metal, etc. It lifts off a lot of grime. Be sure to rise thoroughly.
When done, start engine and everything will dry off.
There are more meticulous ways of doing this, but this works well enough if you work at it a bit and use the brush.
