Thanks for the ideas, gentlemen. I tried the syringe method this morning (oddly, I did have a giant syringe around the house). Unfortunately, no luck. I did three 'injections' and got a few bubbles out of the reservoir on the first try and none after that. I really can't imagine it could be a bleeding technique issue at this point, or that there's significant air in the system.
I also inspected the soft line and it looked good and dry (it was replaced with hydraulic hose when the master cylinder was replaced the first time about 175k ago). The feeder hose from the reservoir to the master cylinder looked a little wet, but not being a pressure line I don't think this would be the issue.
I would expect at least some pedal pressure after all this, but there's none. The fluid level doesn't go down pumping the clutch, so I don't think there's a leak in the pressure system or that the slave went bad (which would be odd since it was working to some degree before the new master cylinder).
I really can't imagine what it could be except a defective new part, but I haven't heard of this before for master cylinders, and I assume they bench test them.
Unfortunately, I'm looking at an embarrassing tow to a mechanic at this point (my first need for 'professional' intervention for 9 years!).
