For me, it was the cost of repairing the A/C that did my old 9k's in.
I started out with an '86 9kT, and when the A/C repair and a new windshield exceeded the value of the car, I sold it for a '92 9kT. When the A/C in that one went out, I discovered that replacing the R-12 refrigerant was very expensive, and the R-134a just never worked very well, so I sold that one and bought a '94. The 'newer' 9k's seem to be more reliable, and cheaper to maintain - in general, and the A/C system in particular.
That being said, in my area, I regularly see a '91 9000 turbo, an '91 9000 S, and my indy mechanic has an '88 9000 turbo (which he says is his favorite year/model Saab).
