shifter falling out...

So after letting my sister use my 96 CSE this summer, she managed to make it so the shifter lock ring had come loose. 5 years of driving the car and this had never happened. 2 days with her and BAM. Anyway, looking at a remarkably similar NG 900 shifter I have laying around, I can not for the life of me see anything that may have broken or snapped off but apparently something is missing because the ring wants to over rotate when I put the car in reverse. This finally happened to me yesterday but has now happened to my wife twice. I shift differently than she does so I understand why it would befall her but what am I missing all the same. Is there supposed to be a stop of some sort keeping the ring from over rotating and the NG 900 part I have is for some reason similarly broken (though I used the NG900 shifter for 3 years in a car without any problems.)
I'd appreciate your help on this one. If I have to buy new pieces, so be it. But I don't want to miss something that a new ring wouldn't correct.
