After reading posts about confused shifting and several losses of reverse (corrected by shit to park and back to reverse)on automatic transmissions, I'm happy to report success in seal and gasket replacement. The middle seal was cracked through and both rubber seals were brittle. When I took them out, the just cracked into pieces.

The car has 207,456 miles currently.I was concerned that the new seals were too big because there was play over and above the ridge in the governor-body but remembered Nat's trick to slather on a lot of vasoline to keep them sliding and in place.

One write up said it is a two hour job - it took me four but I was being careful and taking digital photos to document orientation etc.

I must say, it is shifting like a new car now. I have heard that some people ditch their 9000 automatics when these symtoms arise. I also feel that many are taken advantage of if they show up to a transmission shop with these symptoms - and get charges $1,000 or more. Parts were 48 dollars including new o-ring for transmission filter plate (3 screws).
