Interesting rear hatch leak

After some heavy rain a couple weeks back I had some water, not a lot, on the plastic sheeting I had on the trunk floor while transporting some messy stuff. None of the usual suspects seemed to be at fault: Sunroof drains are clear. There was no water under the trunk floor or under any seats. Headliner is dry. The car is on my sloped driveway, and the water was toward the back of the plastic sheeting.
But I noticed a scatter of water droplets on the removable shelf, near the right rear speaker. Almost like it had been sprayed on there. And a little water on the top of the back seat.
So yesterday, between deluges, I went out to investigate.
Turns out there was an accumulation of dirt and assorted grunge built up around the flexible wiring cover that goes from the car body into the top of the hatch. It created a little dam that blocked the water coming off the roof from draining around the side of the hatch. So it would fill up and dribble, a few drops at a time, and get past the gasket for the hatch. The gasket is 15 years old and is less than a perfect seal. The dribbles landed on the shelf or the very back edge of the rear seat and find their way to the plastic in the trunk.
On a flat driveway it would take a lot longer to show up and might not even matter.
How's that for a quirky tidbit of information!
