I went through the very same issue. I bought a '95 Saab 9k from a friend whom after the axle tore up, he sold it to me for a couple hundred versus spending the $1000+ the shop quoted. This is a NICE car otherwise and I've had a few SAABs in my time so I jumped on the offer. First I diagnosed it and determined the inner driver was ruined where the inner axle tripod came out of the driver and beat up the inner driver. I got a good used complete end to end axle assemble from another '95 automatic car. Since the whole used assemble was in quite good condition, I just removed the old inner driver and slipped the complete replacement axle in, tightened it all up, new trans fluid, etc..., etc...
The car ran/drove very well, everything worked and no issues for over 100 or more miles during a few days. Then, I go to pull out onto a sharp left incline and pop, clunk, clunk and there I sat :( WTF?
After getting it home again and disassembling everything it was clear the inner cv again seperated and tore up the inner driver. Everything was tight and there was absolutely no way it could be anything other than the axle falling out at just the right angle with the wheels turned nearly fully for it to come out but that could only be due to an incorrect, too short axle length.
So, now I again started looking up which axle would be correct. Almost all sights showed and/or parts guys told me the same axle was used for varying years for the early to mid 90's 9k's with different engine and or trans. This made no sense because I sure as hell knew mine had to be a different, longer length.
Finally, Empi gave me the correct info that my car used a different axle length/part #. It's merely about 3/4 difference but that's all that was needed. Those inner drivers are hard to find but luckily I was able to find 2 good used ones cheap and I'm back on the road.
Be careful guys, this could be a potential tragedy in the right circumstances. In hindsight, I remember thinking the wheel looked tilted in a little at the top. This can fool you after the car is let down off the jackstands until the suspension levels out once moved but it really is due to an axle that is just a little too short. I'd hate to think how many incorrect axles might be out there. Apparently it took the previous owner 4 months until he encountered just the right angles for the replacement axle to fall out on him.
