Can't teach an old (memory) seat new tricks.

I have three driver seat brains, all from '96s, all working fine for all adjustments.
But if I go to try to set my own memory settings, all three seem to revert to memories of days gone by, and refuse to accept new settings. Hit the memory button and "1" and you get the same result as if you hit just "1" which is, running off to whatever it once was set at.
I tried each in turn and even tried them with a second memory-button switch that I had taken apart and cleaned in case of any trouble inside it. It's as if the signal from the M key isn't getting through to the brains.
I have one other seat, in another car, the memory of which works fine. I will try that seat's Memory button switch on this car just in case it works any better than the other two.
Anyone know, is there any hope of getting back the memory function? (Alzheimer's pills for cars?)
