In the process of trying to resolve a transaxle issue in my 94 Aero, I decided to replace my upper engine mount (the one on the engine). After seeing how they chose to attach the alternator to the mount bracket and reading on the board the creative solutions, I decided I would carefully hacksaw the mount in situ. That lasted 5mins.
So, I bit the bullet and decided to remove the mount.
The engine mount bracket is held to the car with (4) 13MM bolts. The alternator is bolted to that mount by (2)Hex bolts. It looks like a royal PITA. It turned out to be relatively painless. I didn't remove the fender liner or wheel.
1) disconnect (-) cable at batter and strut tower.
2) lift PS resevoir up and lay across intake manifold.
3) loosen Serpentine belt
4) remove upper alternator bolt (this takes awhile because one of the idler pulley's impedes the sweep of the wrench
5) LOOSEN the lower bolt by about 3 full turns.
6) Swing the alternator back toward the firewall
7) remove the (4) bolts holding the upper mount bracket
I did the full job in about 90 minutes, although I used a Poly insert for replacement.
Just wanted to share that the alternator doesn't need to be totally removed nor do you have to remove the wheel and fender liner.
